Online learning presents students with an abundance of opportunities to learn in ways customized for them, but that freedom carries a unique set of challenges. Here are our tips to help students succeed in a virtual classroom.

Accountability is key

The independence that comes with online school should be offset with a commitment to organization and time management. Embracing a consistent routine can help students structure their day in a way that works best for them. A student’s Assignment and Work Record (AWR) is used to keep track of assignments and manage deadlines.

Stay present

When learning behind a screen, it can be tempting to multitask or scroll through social media, but distractions inhibit a student’s ability to properly absorb information. Some students may find they need to set boundaries to properly focus on what’s in front of them. Logging on from a dedicated workspace helps students effectively transition into a learning mindset. Productivity techniques like time blocking and “do not disturb” settings allow students to fully commit to the task in front of them for a stretch of time before moving on.

Prioritize healthy breaks

Although powering through schoolwork may seem efficient, it can lead to burnout in the long run. A traditional facility-based school day has built-in downtime with passing periods and lunch, and online learners should model a similar structure at home by taking time for mood-boosting pauses aimed to improve mental and physical health. Many online students choose to go for a mid-day walk, eat lunch away from their desk or implement a daily meditation practice.

Make connections

Just because non-classroom based students forego the traditional group learning environment doesn’t mean they have to miss out on social interactions. Whether in person or online, participation in study groups is a great way to foster meaningful connections with peers while enhancing understanding of their schoolwork. One way to meet other Epic students is to sign up for one of our field trips. Our field trip page is updated with new opportunities frequently during the school year. Outside of academics, students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and seek out extracurricular activities that give them a healthy outlet to explore their interests.

Dress for success

While it can be tempting to stay in pajamas when attending school from the comfort of home, getting dressed can help set the tone for the day and shift students’ mentality from leisure to learning. That said, loungewear is a perfectly suitable option for most students. Find what works best for your student. Every online learning experience is different. At Epic Charter School, we’re here every step of the way to provide support and assistance to ensure every student is set up for success.
