SUMMARY:Ocean Institute - Marine Mammal Lab (K-4)
DESCRIPTION:In this program\, the book The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler is used to explore fact and fiction about whales. Students use microscopes to examine plankton and krill as they learn about the diets of marine mammals\, sort mammal and non-mammal artifacts\, listen to whale sounds\, and observe fascinating whale “hitchhikers.” Students learn the characteristics of mammals. They observe\, identify\, and then sort a variety of animal artifacts and replicas into mammal and non-mammal categories. The mammals are then sorted further into land (terrestrial) and marine mammal categories. Students learn about life cycles\, discovering that some plankton are larval forms of animals they know\, such as sea stars\, lobsters\, and snails. Students also learn about whales’ communication and echolocation abilities\, using tuning forks and hydrophones to experiment with sound waves and sound production\, and viewing video and sound clips of whales. \n\nDate:\nWednesday\, May 20th | 9:30 am-10:30 am \nCost:\n$15 per student with learning funds\n \nGrade(s):\nK-4; Due to limited space\, this field trip is for Epic students only. \nAddress:\nOcean Institute \n24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive\nDana Point\, CA 92629\n*Students are responsible for transportation to and from the venue. \nRegister Now \n\n✉️ Don’t miss important field trip communications! SUMMARY:Riley's Farm - Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:The struggle for independence is more than charts\, trends\, and abstract academic theories.\nIt is the story of what Patrick Henry labeled “wise men\, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty!” \nRe-live that great struggle with us and bring the American Revolution alive! \nAs you arrive\, you’ll be placed in “townships.” You’ll stay with your township throughout the day and visit various village posts. After everyone has arrived and is on the main green\, the regulars will check you for contraband. If smugglers are found\, they will be arrested in a brief recreation of the “Gaspee Affair.” The excitement begins when the American minutemen attempt to come to the rescue. \nAfter the opening skirmish\, you’ll be off to participate in several hands-on stations. Textbooks come alive as students participate in these fun and challenging activities. \nAfter you’re done with your village posts\, you’ll have a brief lunch. You’ll be given a soldier’s ration of lemonade\, cornbread\, cheese\, an apple\, and dried beef. \nIf that’s not enough\, visit the Bakery. You can also feel free to bring your own food to supplement your ration. \nAfter lunch\, students get to participate in a mock battle\, a recreation of the 1775 Battle of St. George’s Tavern. Colonial Townships will use their martial drilling training to defend the tavern behind a dry stone wall\, while the Redcoat Townships will attempt to march on the tavern. \nWe encourage all our 5th-grade and 8th-grade students who have studied the Revolutionary War this year to attend! \nDate:\nWednesday\, May 6\, 2026 | 10:00 am – 1:30 pm\n \nCost:\n$24 per student with learning funds. Parents and siblings are welcome to join us on the day of the field trip by purchasing a ticket on the day of the event. If you plan to attend\, please arrive early to purchase your ticket(s). \nGrade(s):\nK-12\n*geared towards 4th-6th grade \nAddress:\n12261 S. Oak Glen Rd.
